Traveling Don’ts
- Don’t put them in the front seat.
This is actually a very dangerous area for your cat to be in. If the airbag deflates, this will injure your cat. It’s best to leave the front seats to humans. - Don’t stuff them underneath luggage at the back.
When inside a car, cats need to be placed where there is good ventilation so putting them at the back underneath heaps of luggage is not a good idea. - Never leave them inside the car unattended.
You should always check on your cat, making sure the temperature is at an ideal level for them. With this, it would be a very bad idea to leave them inside a car unattended. - Don’t give them pet tranquilizers unless prescribed by your vet.
Pet tranquilizers are used to keep pets calm and sedates during a trip. However, you think this will be beneficial for your cat you shouldn’t just immediately give them one for your travel. Pet tranquilizers should only be used when extremely necessary and when they are prescribed by a vet. Some cats actually become more agitated when given a sedative and when traveling by plane these can even alter the way they adjust to changes in temperature. - Don’t ship Persian cats in the cargo holds.
Air travel isn’t recommended for pets are these aren’t very safe for them. However, if it’s absolutely necessary there are certain measures that can be taken to keep it a comfortable and safe experience for them. If you have a Persian cat though and an airline won’t permit you to travel with them in the cabin, don’t forego your travel plan. You should never ship a Persian cat in cargo holds as they are at high risk to experience heat stroke and oxygen deprivation.
Traveling can be a bad or good experience for you and your beloved feline. It all depends on the preparation that you make beforehand. Make sure it would be the second one by following the tips listed above. When not necessary you can always have someone to ask for sitting. Hiring a professional cat sitter or boarding them at a hotel or kennel is fairly easy these days.
